Labour Market Growth

Milton Keynes is home to circa 10,000 businesses, which provide over 130,700 jobs. The city saw a significant increase in both jobs and businesses over the 7 years from 1999 to 2006. And, between 2005 and 2007, Milton Keynes became home to an additional 1,740 new businesses, providing over 12,600 new jobs. In addition, during the same period, over 1500 of the city's existing establishments expanded, providing over 17,000 new jobs.

Between 1995 and 2007 Government data shows the number of jobs within the city increasing by over 41% - more than double the national increase.

 

Between 1995 and 2000, Milton Keynes' annual rate of job growth continued to outperform both the South East and Great Britain: Milton Keynes' rate was 4.9%. The comparable figure for the South East region was 3.3% and for Great Britain as a whole, the rate was1.8%.

 

The labour force in Milton Keynes is forecast to grow to approximately 17,300 over the period of 2007-2015, assuming levels of economic growth seen in early to mid 2008 are maintained.
