Government pumps 2.5m into new green skills academy with Milton Keynes back office
The government has announced £2.5m in new funding to support the development of a national network of environmental training courses, to tackle the emerging shortfall in skilled workers capable of installing renewable energy technologies such as solar panels and heat pumps.
The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills announced late last week that it will invest £2.5m over the next three years in a new environmental technologies National Skills Academy with a central administration and co-ordinating office in Milton Keynes.

Renewable Power Systems has won a £10m contract to build and operate a state of the art anaerobic digestion system for Milton Keynes Council.
The facility will process all of Milton Keynes food and garden waste - more than 25,000 tonnes each year, as the council expects the amount of organic waste to rise to 30,000 tonnes in the next five to seven years.
Biogas produced by the AD process will generate electricity to power the facility itself and the bulk of it will be pumped into Milton Keynes' district heating system.

Renault-Nissan Leaf launch in Milton Keynes
The Renault-Nissan Alliance yesterday signed an agreement with the UK city of Milton Keynes giving its residents priority on orders of the two companies' electric vehicles.
In return, Milton Keynes Council will support the installation of 430 electric vehicle recharging points in public and private locations around the city and in up to 2000 homes.
Milton Keynes is part of the Joined-Cities Plan, which aims to create a network of charging points across the country, and is receiving funds to support the rollout of electric vehicle infrastructure via the Government's £30 million Plugged-In Places scheme.

Milton Keynes based gym chain Energie fitness clubs are reaping rewards from a niche market. Now boss Jan Spaticchia wants to expand abroad.
Energie gyms are franchised. "We don't own any of the sites," says Spaticchia, "but in terms of brand over the doors, we are third in the UK behind Fitness First and LA Fitness." Income for the group is £13m of which £3m goes to the Spaticchia set-up based in Milton Keynes. The business is profitable and carries no debt.

Milton Keynes gains Plugged-In Places grant
Government announced today that motorists will receive up to £5,000 to buy an ultra-low carbon car.
Plans for low carbon vehicles include the roll-out of a £30m Government fund for a network of electric vehicle hubs - called Plugged-In Places - which will see charging infrastructure appearing in car parks, major supermarkets, leisure and retail centres, as well as on the street.
The first Plugged-In Places were today named today as London, Milton Keynes and the North East; and between them they will be installing over 11,000 vehicle recharging points during the next three years.

Recession has bitten hardest in cities already ravaged by long-term industrial decline, exacerbating the divide between Britain's strongest and weakest regions, according to a thinktank report published today.
The areas that should thrive are those with what Finch calls fixed assets: a high skills base, good transport links, a location close to other prosperous urban areas, and so on. The report identifies Brighton, Milton Keynes and Reading as "cities to watch".

Papa John's invests five million pounds to support network growth
PIZZA delivery franchisor Papa John's has announced plans to invest over £5 million in developing a new fresh dough facility to support its growth plans for the UK.
The factory is to be sited in Milton Keynes covering nearly 50,000 sq ft, and is scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2010.
"Our new dough plant will provide more than adequate space to cope with our expansion plans, and we are delighted to have secured such a fantastic site," said Papa John's UK Managing Director Ian Saunders.
